And Yet It Moves: “It’s all about the music”

  • January 1, 1970
  • Upset

Remember last month, when Upset teamed up with Fluffer Records for the fourth edition of all-dayer, Custard Thruster? With IDLES headlining and fab bands like Nova Twins and such further down the bill? Housed in an industrial unit in East London, over a dozen new bands played all afternoon, from 1pm right through ’til 3am. There was even a BBQ.

Well, the party doesn’t stop there. This weekend (Saturday, 10th December) marks the fifth instalment, with headliners God Damn, as well as And Yet It Moves (Ex-Amazing Snakeheads), Yowl, Dead Coast, Dead Pretties, Dressmaker, Average Sex, Dolls, Savage Mansion, Mush and The Das.

We tackle And Yet It Moves’ Dale, Laura and Jonas/Slasher to find out what they’re about ahead of the big day.

Hey guys, what are we interrupting?
You’re interrupting our yearly raisin hunt. We currently huddled ’round a dying laptop in the highlands of the DRC. Coked out our minds and loving life. The locals are wonderful.

Lovely. How did you guys get together to form the band, and what do you each bring to the table?
We met at a music conference in Zurich.
Mike Diva brings luxury goods from the south of France. Fresh off the beach.
Deep Lapp brings a DEEP understanding of the sewers systems of Rome. A very DEEP man?
Jonas/Slasher brings Lucozade. The young man has a bright future.
Laura St. Jude is a stone cold killer. She brings danger to the outfit.
Dale Barclay brings the party to a close.

And how have you found life as And Yet It Moves so far? Has 2016 treated you well?
Life in And Yet It Moves this year has been a mixture of broken hearts and hearts. You know what I’m sayin’? Two become one. You know what I’m sayin’, Keith? 2016 has treated And Yet It Moves with kindness and appreciation. She put her arms around us and squeezed us beetroot folly folly folly somebody stops me.

If we forced you at gunpoint to tell us the band’s main objective – for example: are you all about fun, challenging ‘the man’, working through your feelings, etc. – what would it be?
And Yet It Moves is a collective with one main objective: MUSIC. IT’S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. NO BULLSHIT. ALL WELCOME.

Where does And Yet It Moves fit into your history of making music? Does the band allow you to explore anything you haven’t previously?
Hopefully nowhere.
Certainly.

You’re playing the Custard Thruster all-dayer later this month – are you looking forward to it?
Yes!

You’ve also a Christmas party in Glasgow coming up: do you get some time off after that? How do you recharge after a busy year?
Black Sheep Christmas Party, 16th December. The Kinning Park Complex, Glasgow. Miss it and forever be in regret.
We head to Aspen for the winter months. Proper trippy vibes. Rest and relaxation. Acid baths. Hard muscle. Skiing. Eating. Etc…

What would you most like to have achieved by this time next year, that you haven’t already?
We must finish our first double album ‘Drugs, Ribs and Sci-fi’, and for it to have been heard by the masses.

What’s the best thing about being in And Yet It Moves right now?
That we are able to play music a lot.

Finally – what was your favourite album of 2016 and why?
DROEM – Only three songs out on YouTube, though.
BTW OZRIC TENTACLES IS THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD.
