The new Rise Records signees recorded with Ryan Furlott, and also co-wrote a couple of tracks with the legendary John Feldmann. Singer Zack introduces his new band.
How did you guys meet and decide to form a band? You’re originally from different places, aren’t you?
Yes, we’re located in Dallas, Texas, but only two of us are even from Texas. We were all on separate projects previously, but they all ended around the same time, so thought we’d give this a go.
What was the first thing you did after starting the band? It feels to have been a pretty quick process from formation to album release.
The first thing we did after announcing our band in March of 2016 was release a music video and play a festival the same month haha. We wanted this band to work and fast; we were determined.
When did you start working on your debut album, has it been done and dusted for long?
We started working on it in May of 2016, so it’s been done for a while. We’re SO ready for everyone to finally hear it.
Do you all share songwriting duties, or do different elements fall on different band members?
All of the songs on the album are all written very differently, the only constant through them all is that I write the lyrics and melody, aside from the songs I co-wrote with John Feldmann.
Are there any themes or topics on the album that are especially important to you?
The whole album is very moody, and the theme of anxiety is very apparent throughout the album. I’m a very anxious person, so it’s fitting.
What did you set out to achieve with ‘Good Excuses’? Is there extra pressure for it being your debut, do you think?
We focused very hard on just writing he best songs possible. We weren’t worried about sticking to one type of music or how it would be perceived; we just wanted good songs, no matter what style. There’s always a bit more pressure for the debut, but we welcome it. We’re proud of our album and want people to love it as much as we do.
How did you come to sign with Rise Records?
We sent them some demos we had done, and everything just fell in place!
Did you do anything to celebrate the signing?
We sure did. We went and recorded our album just weeks after. That’s the best celebration.
Who’re some of your favourite bands at the moment? You’ve mentioned Brand New before, what do you make of the new album?
Brand New all the way. I think the new album is amazing. It’s just the right amount of old ‘Daisy’-esque style and a new touch of something different that makes me want to listen again and again. Don Broco and Nothing More are the few new bands I’ve been listening to, and I recommend them to everyone.
