To celebrate, Tom Hudson from Leeds’ own Pulled Apart by Horses has a chat about all things Horror…
So, Tom, we’re here to ask you about scary films – let’s start off easy: what’s your favourite horror flick?
Oh heck! That’s a tall order as there are so many different horror sub-genres. I am a massive horror film geek – have been since I accidentally watched Nightmare On Elm Street and It when I was far too young! I can’t whittle it down to one, so I’ll have to pick three.
The Thing (it’s kind of sci-fi horror, but I still class it as a horror) – I would say that this film is actually my favourite film over any film or genre. John Carpenter’s cabin fever suspense, the mind-blowing animatronics and physical special effects, the ice cold setting, the amazing acting (Kurt fricking Russel for god’s sake!) and the Ennio Morricone soundtrack – it can’t be beat!
Next up is Suspiria by Dario Argento. This is up there will my all time faves. It’s a work of Giallo psychedelic horror art. Made in the 70s, filmed in hyper colour, a script that barely makes any sense, a soundtrack created by 70s Italian prog band Goblin, fake blood that is like Wilko’s poster paint, some of the most innovative death scenes ever seen, evil ancient witches, evil jugular biting dogs, slipping from a window into a room full of barbed wire, evil bat attacks, consistent psychedelic red and blue-hued lighting, art deco architecture.
Nightmare On Elm Street. As this was one of my first’s is has a fond place in my dark and twisted heart. Freddy Krueger is an amazing character (although they ended up turning him into a slapstick caricature of himself throughout the series until Wes Craven gained back credibility with New Nightmare) The film is surreal, over the top whilst subtle and creepy in the right places, 80’s cheese in the best way, imaginatively gory, little Jonny Depp’s first film (in which he dies… badly!), amazing one-liners, so many jump scares (the final jump scare scene still cracks me up) & manipulative editing, a creepy as fook soundtracks / nursery rhyme theme, amazing and innovative special effects!

What’s the scariest thing you’ve ever seen on film?
I think rather than daft jump scare tactics, some of the films that have generally creeped the hell out of me and stuck with me for a decent length of time have to be The Shining, The Exorcist & It. All of them have that slow-burning tension that sends chills to your spine and haunts you for days after.
Do you prefer psychological horror (like Poltergeist, Paranormal Activity etc.) or gory horror (like Saw)?
I like both, it all depends on what mood I’m in. I love feeling scared, or freaked out by something that gets embedded in your brain and creeps the hell out of you but then I also enjoy the over the top special effects, tongue in cheek, blood-soaked ridiculousness of films like Braindead, Dawn Of The Dead (original!), Planet Terror, Street Trash, Evil Dead II.
I’m not much of a fan of the modern horror stuff that’s hyper-realistic, it feels TOO real… like watching a snuff film or something. Not enough dark humour, creativity, experimentation, imagination going on.
Who do you think is the best horror film villain or monster of all time?
Although I haven’t mentioned it in my ultimate horror film list, I would have to say Michael Myers from Halloween. The thing that makes him so creepy is that he is a real person and not some supernatural beast. He’s a youngish guy that’s dealing with a lot of psychological issues and emotional trauma that have been building up over the years. Even though he is a faceless, menacing, shape that lurks in the shadows and kills he is also a conflicted, confused, naive, lost child that is searching for who he is. I think this depth is what makes him such a good character.
What’s the weirdest horror film you’ve ever seen?
I think the weirdest Horror I have ever seen has to be the part comedy, part horror, part psychedelic 70’s Japanese film called Hausu. It’s absolutely bonkers and makes no sense at all. A group of giggling teenage school girls that act like four-year-olds, weird overly romantic, poetic scripts, a piano that eats people and then is played by floating severed fingers, an evil witch Auntie, a dancing jiggling skeleton that’s kept in a closet, a haunted cat painting that excretes gallons of blood, a guy who turns into a cartoon skeleton and crumbles, a floating head that constantly laughs and bites people.
Do you remember the first horror film you ever saw? How old were you?
It’s between the Stephen King film It or Wes Craven’s Nightmare On Elm Street. I think it was ‘Nightmare’ as I remember having an old TV in my bedroom and I started watching it on channel 4 late at night. I think I must have been about 9 or 10. It stayed with me loads, I don’t think I even watched the whole film but just caught a few scenes. I remember every time I went to sleep I had to keep kidding myself that Freddy wasn’t in my room. The only scene I remembered from that time was when Nancy is daydreaming at school and all of a sudden sees her friend that had been previously killed, in a body bag, getting dragged by an invisible presence down the school corridors as she left a trail of dark black / red blood. Fucking creepy! As well as that I saw It way too early and used to think I could see Pennywise the clown stood behind my door as I was trying to fall asleep.
Have you ever had to abort watching a horror film halfway through because it was just too scary?
No I don’t think so. I loved being scared and creeped out. It parts of the reason why I love horror films. I hate turning any film off halfway through, once I start watching something I feel like it’s my duty to see it through to the end! Saying that though…. I have watched a lot of modern horror films that have annoyed the hell out of me. Ones that are full of CGI and dull and predictable scares. I think I ended up turning Sinister off three-quarters of the way through it. It started well, was creepy and atmospheric and then just got annoying stupid (not even in a fun way) and I just turned it off in an act of frustration!
What’s the creepiest thing you’ve ever experienced IRL?
I’ve told a few people this story to the point where it’s blurred whether it’s actually a memory or part imagined. I was a kid, about 10 or 11 walking around a neighbouring street with a mate. Bored out of our brains with nothing to do. We were on a Cul De Sac where my Auntie used to live when all of a sudden an ambulance raced past us both and round the corner of the road. The ambulance didn’t look like a modern one though (with all the luminous strip lights and neon colouring), it looks like it was from the 60s / 70s. I could see an old guy on a stretcher that was on a drip in the back through the window and a couple of medics in the vehicle. Me and my friend ran around the corner to see where it was going only to realise that the ambulance wasn’t there and the direction where the ambulance was travelling was a dead end (as it was a Cul De Sac), and there was just a brick wall and a lot of garages there instead of a path. I still to this day don’t understand what it means or what it was. If it was imagined then why the hell would I come up with that and hold onto it as a memory. And why did me and my friend both witness the same thing? Creepy as fuck!
Finally – you’re alone in the house, it’s the middle of the night, and you hear a strange noise coming from upstairs… do you go investigate?
Haha, of course I investigate! Although I still have an overactive imagination and freak myself out all the time. I used to be really scared of the dark (or what lived in the dark) so when I’m the last one up in my house and have to turn all the lights out to go to bed….. I still have a little pang of excitement and fear as if someone / something is stood behind me.
