Dilly Dally’s ‘Sore’ was a raging burst of frustration and desire. It was on fire, and it was brilliant. Dilly Dally’s ‘Heaven’ is more centred. Self-help and radical realisations, the band don’t just find their voice, they want to scream from the mountaintop. And it is brilliant.
From the breaking dawn snarl of ‘I Feel Free’, ‘Heaven’ is full of spray paint love. Big, bold declarations erupt from within, repeated until they’re believed and held aloft for the whole world to see. Feelings of doom, depression and destruction flirt with the shadows, always present but never making it past the empowering promises the band make to themselves and you. ‘Believe’ is direct and confrontational, ‘quaking with the message to “Believe in yourself’ while ‘Sober Motel’ thrashes this way and that before proclaiming “The world is radical” with unwavering trust.
There’s an energy across the record, excitable new discoveries and bubbling connections rekindled shaking off a weary world and replacing it with wide eyes and open arms. There’s a weight behind every ray of positivity, hard-fought and richly deserved, as the band comfort and encourage. For all the new though, ‘Heaven’ still feels like Dilly Dally. It’s still magic. It’s still unfiltered. It’s still brilliant.
