Leaning more and more into the gothic sounds inspired by The Cure (with a hint of Nine Inch Nails) that were showcased on No Devotion’s debut, ‘No Oblivion’ is a good record from a very good band.
Songs like the title-track, ‘A Sky Deep and Clear’, and recent single ‘Repeaters’ drip with brooding dark synths, big echoing drums, and Geoff Rickly’s voice dripping with reverb. The album’s high point comes on ‘Love Songs From Fascist Italy’ with its dark romanticism feeling like the soul of the album and ties it all together with a nice bow on top.
This is a band who stared into the void and walked away from it. It’s a good thing they did too, because ‘No Oblivion’ is an absolutely fantastic second album. ■ Josh Williams
